I was born and raised in Ayrshire on the South West Coast of Scotland and my schooling in art there captured my imagination.  I painted street scenes and landscapes in my local area.   Immigrating to Australia in my early twenties I continued with various creative pursuits e.g. porcelain painting and took up oil painting in 2002.

An awareness and love of natural environment in the landscape still continues to provide the inspiration for a great deal of my work. Painting landscape for its own sake, tapping on the mind’s eye, memories of places, sensing the sometimes vibrant elements of colour and variety of shapes found in nature and capturing light visually is the challenge and I am driven to put my interpretation of this onto canvas.

The medium I favour mostly is oil as I like the body of the paint and the ability to work back into it. I have produced works ranging in size from small to very large canvases, sometimes working en Plein air, in conventional landscape, tonal landscape, still life and expressionist styles and have exhibited some of those works. A number of these works depict trees close up, in forests, painted in an expressive style. What is it about trees? I feel that the importance of trees and sensitivity to the land cannot be overstated and I have long been as fascinated by the vital role trees play in our ecosystems as well as visually exploring their endless variety of forms, textures and colours within our landscape.

I also enjoy working in ink on paper when I’m away from home as it can be more practical than the difficulty dealing with large wet oil paintings when travelling. I have also explored the genre of abstract work recently and find this most enjoyable and it is interesting to see what evolves from the subconscious.
